-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Amagansett (SP-693), 1917-1919.
Originally, and later, the civilian fishing vessel Amagansett.
Amagansett, a 145 gross ton steam fishing vessel of
the "Menhadden Fisherman" type was built at Kennebunk,
Maine, in 1879. In May 1917 she was chartered by the U.S. Navy
and placed in commission as USS Amagansett (SP-693). The
ship spent the rest of World War I, and the first few months following
the war, performing minesweeping and patrol duties in the vicinity
of Norfolk, Virginia. She was decommissioned and returned to her
owner in March 1919.
This page features our only views of USS Amagansett
(SP-693) and the civilian fishing vessel Amagansett.

Amagansett (American Fishing Vessel, 1879)
In port, circa 1917, possibly after being taken over by the Navy.
Note the interesting pattern of her paintwork, perhaps some kind
of camouflage. The ferry Castleton is in the background.
This "Mehanden Fisherman" was commissioned as USS Amagansett
(SP-693) on 17 May 1917, for World War I service, and returned
to her owner on 12 March 1919.
The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
