USS Cybele, a 5244-ton Acubens class stores issue ship, was built at New Orleans, Louisiana, as the civilian "Liberty" ship William Hackett. Transferred to the Navy upon completion in mid-November 1944, she was converted at Tampa, Florida, and placed in commission in April 1945. Cybele carried cargo to the western Pacific in June and July, spent a short time in the Philippines and went on to Tokyo Bay at the end of August 1945, a few days before Japan's surrender ended World War II. For the next eight months she provided logistics support for occupation efforts in Japan and China, then returned to the United States, arriving in May 1946. USS Cybele was decommissioned in August of that year and transferred to the Maritime Commission in April 1947. While laid up at Suisun Bay, California, her name reverted to William Hackett until October 1954, when she was again named Cybele. She was sold for scrapping in April 1965.
