USS Crystal (PY-25), 1942-1947

USS Crystal, a 1030-ton patrol vessel, was built in 1929 at Wilmington, Delaware, as the civilian yacht Vida. The Navy acquired her in January 1942 and placed her in commission in February. Sent to the Hawaiian Islands a few months later, Crystal operated in that area on transport, escort and patrol duty until after the end of World War II. She was stationed at Midway Island from December 1943 until April 1944 and later served as a weather station ship. USS Crystal went to San Francisco, California, in November 1945 and was decommissioned there in March 1946. She was transferred to the U.S. Maritime Commission in April 1947.

This page features our only view of USS Crystal (PY-25).
