USS Caliph, a 60-foot section patrol motor boat, was built in 1910 by the Matthews Yacht Building Company as a pleasure craft. She was leased by the Navy in May 1917 for World War I service and operated during that year in the waters of the 4th Naval District (Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware area). Laid up for the winter at Washington, D.C., in December 1917, she was recommissioned in April 1918 and resumed her patrol duties. Caliph was returned to her owners in early December 1918, less than a month after the 11 November Armistice had brought the "Great War" fighting to an end.
This page features the only view we have concerning USS Caliph (SP-272).
