Dorchester, a 50-foot Chesapeake Bay "Bugeye" type schooner, was built in 1893. She was acquired by the Navy in August 1917 and placed in commission as USS Dorchester (ID # 1509). After World War I service in the Fifth Naval District's Maryland and Virginia waters, she was decommissioned and returned to her owner, the Conservation Commission of Maryland, on 26 November 1918.
