-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Eagle (SP-145), 1917-1919.
Later renamed SP-145.
Formerly the Civilian Motor Boat Eagle (1909)
USS Eagle, an 80-foot patrol craft, was built in 1909
by J.M. Bayles & Son of Port Jefferson, New York, for use as a
pleasure craft. She was acquired by the Navy in early 1917 from
Colonel William Hester of Brooklyn, N.Y., and placed in commission
in September of that year as USS Eagle (SP-145). Since
that name was already borne by another Navy ship, her name was
changed to SP-145 in April 1918. Assigned to the Third
Naval District, the boat spent her entire World War I era career
in the vicinity of New York City. She was stricken from the list
of Naval vessels in March 1919 and sold in late June 1919.
This page features the only views we have concerning USS
Eagle (SP-145), USS SP-145, and the civilian motor
boat Eagle of 1909.
