USS Finland (ID # 4543), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Finland (American Passenger
Liner, 1902)
In April 1918 the Army-chartered transport Finland
was transferred to the U.S. Navy and placed in commission as USS
Finland. At some point during the next few years she was
assigned the registry ID # 4543. Continuing her transport
work, she took nearly 13,000 troops to France during the remaining
months of World War I and, after the 11 November 1918 Armistice,
brought home some 28,000 veterans of the great conflict. In all,
USS Finland made 13 round-trip voyages between the U.S.
and European ports. She was decommissioned in November 1919 and
returned to the War Department.
