USS Hickman (ID # 3554), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Hickman (1918)

Hickman, a 5121 gross ton (10,562 tons displacement) freighter, was built at Shooters Island, New York, as part of the World War I shipbuilding effort. Completed on 14 November 1918, she was delivered to the Navy and commissioned at her builder's yard as USS Hickman (ID # 3554) on 16 November. As a unit of the Naval Overseas Transportation Service, she sailed from New York to France in November 1918 but had to return to New York because of boiler and steering gear problems. Following repairs, the ship completed her voyage to France with general cargo in December and returned to New York with Army cargo in February 1919. She was then ordered to load another cargo, but on 5 March 1919 USS Hickman was decommissioned and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. She remained in Shipping Board hands until scrapped in 1932.

This page features the only view we have concerning USS Hickman (ID # 3554) and the civilian freighter Hickman of 1918.
