USS Halcyon II (SP-582), 1917-1919
Originally named Halcyon; later renamed SP-582
USS Halcyon II, a 161-ton steam yacht, was built in
1907 at Morris Heights, New York as a civilian yacht. Purchased
by the U.S. Navy in August 1917 under the name Halcyon
and placed in commission later in the year, she served on patrol
duties at Boston, Massachusetts, through the rest of World War
I and into the first year of peace. She was renamed SP-582
early in 1918. Badly damaged in a collision in June 1919, she
was stricken from the list of Naval vessels a month later and
sold in December 1919.
This page features all the views we have concerning USS
Halcyon II (SP-582).

USS SP-582 (1917-1919)
Photographed in icy water during the winter of 1917-18, probably
at Boston, Massachusetts. When this view was taken, she may still
have been USS Halcyon II (SP-582) as her name was not
changed to SP-582 until early 1918.
The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
