USS Holland (Submarine # 1) --
Construction
The submarine Holland (or Holland VI, reflecting
her place in the lineage of John
Holland's designs) was built in 1896-1897 at the Crescent
Shipyard, Elizabethport, New Jersey. Launched on 17 May 1897,
her completion was delayed by an accidental flooding in October
of that year. After repairs, she began trials late in the following
February and made her first dive in mid-March 1898.
