USS K-3, a 392-ton K-1 class submarine, was built at San Francisco, California. The name Orca was assigned to her prior to construction, but this was changed to K-3 in November 1911, well over two years before she was launched. The submarine was placed in commission at the end of October 1914 and operated along the West Coast and in Hawaiian waters until late 1917. In response to the demands of World War I, K-3 was then transferred to Key West, Florida, where she spent the rest of the conflict on patrol and training duties. After remaining in East Coast waters for the remainder of her active career, she was decommissioned in February 1923 and laid up in reserve. USS K-3 was scrapped in 1931.
