S.S. Lake Garza, a 2331 gross ton freighter, was built at Lorain, Ohio. Completed in September 1918 and acquired by the Navy, she was placed in commission at Montreal, Quebec as USS Lake Garza (ID # 4086-A). The new ship steamed across the Atlantic to St. Nazaire, France, where she arrived after the November 1918 Armistice ended World War I's active fighting. Following some six months of carrying coal from the British Isles to France, Lake Garza returned to the United States in July 1919. She was soon decommissioned and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. In 1926 she was sold to the Ford Motor Company and scrapped at River Rouge, Michigan.
