S.S. Lake Frances, a 2016 gross ton freighter, was completed at Toledo, Ohio, in July 1918. She was commissioned in the Navy at Montreal, Canada, in August 1918 as USS Lake Frances (ID # 4406). The ship sailed in a convoy from Nova Scotia in August and arrived at Le Havre, France, in September 1918. Assigned to the Army coal trade, for much of the next year Lake Frances carried coal from Cardiff, Wales and other ports in the British Isles to French ports in support of the U.S. Army. She departed Cardiff for the last time in August 1919, arriving at New York in September. Lake Frances was decommissioned in September 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. As a merchantman, S.S. Lake Frances operated under her original name through World War II. Renamed Lee Hwa in 1946, she was dropped from the merchant vessel registers in 1968.
