USS Lake Gakona (ID # 4409-A), 1918-1919.
Originally, and later, S.S. Lake Gakona (American Freighter, 1918)

Lake Gakona, a 2368 gross ton freighter completed at Wyandotte, Michigan, in August 1918, was transferred to the Navy and commissioned at Montreal, Canada, later in that month as USS Lake Gakona (ID # 4409-A). The ship sailed in a convoy from Nova Scotia to Brest, France, in September 1918. Assigned to the Army coal trade, until mid-1919 Lake Gakona carried coal from Cardiff, Wales, and other ports in the British Isles to French ports in support of the U.S. Army. She called at Antwerp, Belgium, in July 1919 and then sailed for the United States. Lake Gakona was decommissioned in August 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board. The ship was scrapped by the Ford Motor Company at Dearborn, Michigan, in 1928.
