USS L-4, at 450-ton L-1 class submarine, was built at Quincy, Massachusetts. Commissioned in early May 1916, she spent the next year and a half in U.S. Atlantic coast waters. In December 1917 L-4 began a voyage across the Atlantic to the European war zone, passing through the Azores along the way. Following her arrival at Berehaven, Ireland, in late February 1918, she began active patrols against German U-boats operating in the vicinity of southern Ireland. Though she encountered the enemy submarines on two occasions, no damage resulted to either side. Early in 1919, about two months after the Armistice ended most World War I combat operations, L-4 returned to the United States. She served for another three years in the East Coast area before being decommissioned in mid-April 1922. USS L-4 was sold for scrapping at the end of July 1922.
