Malang, a 3526 gross ton (7726 tons displacement) freighter, was built in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, in 1898 for Dutch owners. She took refuge at New York in 1914 and was one of the Dutch ships seized under a Presidential proclamation in March 1918 for wartime use by the United States. The ship was commissioned on 2 April 1918 as USS Malang (ID # 2623). After loading a cargo of Army supplies she sailed in a convoy from Halifax, Nova Scotia in late April 1918 and arrived at Brest, France in mid-May. Returning to the United States in June, the freighter loaded another cargo of Army supplies at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and sailed for Brest from Norfolk, Virginia in July. Back in New York in September, Malang carried a cargo of mine laying material from Norfolk to Barry Roads, Wales in October and early November. For the next two months she was assigned to carry potatoes from Belfast, Ireland to French ports. In January 1919 the ship departed Brest with a cargo of ammunition, which she delivered at New York. Malang sailed from New York in early March for Copenhagen, Denmark with 3654 tons of grain consigned to the Food Administration. After delivering this cargo the ship moved to Rotterdam, The Netherlands where on 7 May 1919 she was decommissioned and returned to her owners. S.S. Malang became S.S. Atlantide in 1923. She was wrecked in the River Tagus, Portugal, in March 1934 and was scrapped in Italy in July 1934.
