Mystery, a 97 gross ton (212 tons displacement) fishing boat built at Tottenville, New York, in 1886, was chartered by the Navy in July 1918, taken over the next month and placed in commission early in September 1918 as USS Mystery (ID # 2744). For the next four months, she supported minesweeping operations in the entrances to New York Harbor. With her services no longer needed following the end of World War I, she was returned to her owner in January 1919.
Note on Mystery's number: USS Mystery carried an "S.P." number painted on her bow. However, as was the case for many higher-numbered Section Patrol vessels, her official data card cites her registry number as "ID No. 2744", rather than "S.P. 2744", as would have been a typical data card citation for lower-numbered vessels.
This page features our only views of USS Mystery (ID # 2744) and of the fishing boat Mystery.
