USS Menhaden, a 100-foot minesweeper and tug, was built in 1905 at Pocomoke City, Maryland, for use as a civilian fishing vessel. She was chartered by the Navy for World War I service and placed in commission in May 1917. For nearly two years, Menhaden was employed in patrol, towing and minesweeping support duties in the vicinity of Norfolk, Virginia. She was decommissioned and returned to her owner in March 1919.
