USS Menhaden (SP-847), 1917-1919

USS Menhaden, a 100-foot minesweeper and tug, was built in 1905 at Pocomoke City, Maryland, for use as a civilian fishing vessel. She was chartered by the Navy for World War I service and placed in commission in May 1917. For nearly two years, Menhaden was employed in patrol, towing and minesweeping support duties in the vicinity of Norfolk, Virginia. She was decommissioned and returned to her owner in March 1919.

Her Commanding Officer was Ensign Edwin T. George, USNRF.

USS Menhaden (SP-847)


Photographed during World War I.
Built in 1905, this menhaden fishing boat was commissioned in the Navy on 21 May 1917 and was returned to her owner on 12 March 1919.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
