Polar Sea, a 4120 gross ton (8835 tons displacement) refrigerated cargo ship, was completed at Baltimore, Maryland, in August 1918. She had been launched in February 1918 as S.S. Warrenton but was renamed in or before June. The ship was commissioned in the Navy on 23 October 1918 as USS Polar Sea (ID # 3301). After loading 2265 tons of general Army cargo and 12 Army trucks, she filled the rest of her cargo space with frozen beef and sailed in early November in a convoy for St. Nazaire, France. Polar Sea returned to New York in early January 1919 with a cargo of ammunition. During the next several months, she made two more round trip voyages between New York and St. Nazaire, each time carrying about 2380 tons of frozen beef eastbound and returning in ballast. USS Polar Sea was decommissioned on 12 June 1919 and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board, in whose custody she remained until scrapped in 1937.
