USS Paysandu (ID # 3880), 1919-1919.
Previously S.S. Paysandu (Uruguayan Passenger-Cargo Ship. Originally the German S.S. Bahia of 1898)

USS Paysandu, a 9004-ton (displacement) transport, was built in 1898 at Hamburg, Germany, as the 4817 gross ton passenger-cargo ship Bahia of the Hamburg-South America line. When World War I made the high seas unsafe for German merchant ships, she took refuge at Montevideo, Uruguay, and was later seized by local authorities. Renamed Paysandu, she was transferred to the U.S. flag and given a U.S. Navy armed guard before leaving Montevideo in September 1918.

The ship was taken over by the U.S. Navy in late January 1919, while at New York, and placed in commission as USS Paysandu (ID # 3880). In late June 1919, following service transporting American servicemen home from Europe, she was decommissioned and turned over to the U.S. Shipping Board for return to her owner, the Government of Uruguay.

This page features the only views we have concerning USS Paysandu (ID # 3880) and the civilian freighter Paysandu.
