-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --
USS Rondo (ID # 2488), 1918-1919.
Originally S.S. Rondo (Dutch Freighter, 1914)
S.S. Rondo, a 7549 gross ton (15,300 tons displacement)
freighter, was built at Rotterdam, The Netherlands, in 1914
for commercial service under the Dutch flag. She was seized by
the U.S. Government in March 1918, turned over to the Navy and,
late in that month, placed in commission as USS Rondo (ID
# 2488). The ship made two voyages to and from France between
May and September 1918. She was then fitted as an animal transport
and made one trip in that role, steaming to Uruguay and back during
the first months of 1919. Rondo's final U.S. Navy mission
took her to England in late May with a cargo of food. Continuing
on to Amsterdam, she was decommissioned in June 1919 and returned
to her owners. Following further civilian employment, S.S. Rondo
was scrapped in 1933.
This page features the only views we have concerning USS
Rondo (ID # 2488) and the Dutch freighter Rondo
