USS Samar, a 5159-ton internal combustion engine repair ship, was built at Baltimore, Maryland, under Maritime Commission contract as a "Liberty" type freighter. Launched in mid-October 1944 and delivered to the Navy at the end of that month, she was converted for her intended use and placed in commission in June 1945. World War II's fighting ended while she was en route to the western Pacific, where she arrived in September 1945. Sent on to Chinese waters, Samar served for several months at Shanghai before transferring to Tsingtao in March 1946. During May of that year the ship returned to the U.S. West Coast, where she remained until decommissioned in July 1947. For the next decade and a half she was laid up in Navy custody . In 1962 Samar became part of the Maritime Administration's reserve fleet at Suisun Bay, California. She was sold for "nontransportation use" in December 1973.
