On Board and Close Up Views

In the wake of the tragic sinking of USS S-4 (SS-109) in December 1927, the Navy developed number of safety and rescue-related improvements. In a 1929 overhaul at the Portsmouth Navy Yard S-22 received several early versions these measures, among them marker bouys to allow other ships to quickly locate a sunken submarine and communicate with survivors trapped on board, rescue chambers to permit evacuation of survivors, internal strengthening to retard flooding, and heavy fittings on the external hull to facilitate lifting the submarine from the sea floor. The photographs on this page show some of the items installed at this time.

This page features views taken on board USS S-22 (SS-127) or which show details of her external structure.
