USS Welcome (SP-1175), 1917-1919.
Originally the civilian motor boat Welcome (1914)
USS Welcome, a 40-foot section patrol boat, was built
at St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1914 as a civilian pleasure craft.
In August 1917 she was leased by the Navy and placed in commission
for employment on the Great Lakes during World War I. She was
returned to her owner in March 1919.

Welcome (American Motor Boat, 1914)
Postal card featuring a view of the boat underway in a Great
Lakes port prior to World War I. Photographed by Gallagher, the
original card advertises sightseeing cruises on the St. Louis
River, with Captain Dick Schell as point of contact.
This fast (18 miles per hour) open cockpit type pleasure boat
was acquired by the Navy on 7 August 1917 and placed in commission
as USS Welcome (SP-1175) on 17 August. She was returned
to her owner on 7 March 1919.

Welcome (American Motor Boat, 1914)
In port. Presence of a Sailor indicates that the photo may have
been taken after she was in Navy service.
This fast (18 miles per hour) open cockpit type pleasure boat
was acquired by the Navy on 7 August 1917 and placed in commission
as USS Welcome (SP-1175) on 17 August. Following World
War I duty on the Great Lakes she was returned to her owner,
R.H. Wilcox of Detroit, Michigan, on 7 March 1919.

USS Welcome (SP-1175)
In a Great Lakes area port, during the World War I era.
Acquired by the Navy on 7 August 1917, this former pleasure craft
was placed in commission on 17 August and served on the Great
Lakes for the rest of World War I. She was returned to her owner
on 7 March 1919.
Ship in the background is probably the Coast Guard Cutter Morrill.
The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
