-- U.S. NAVY SHIPS --

USS Wadena (SP-158), 1918-1920.
Originally the civilian yacht Wadena (1891)

USS Wadena, a 250 gross ton patrol yacht, was built in 1891 at Cleveland, Ohio, as the civilian steam yacht of the same name. She was acquired by the Navy in May 1917, converted to a warship and placed in commission in mid-January 1918. In late February, while convoying a group of submarine chasers, she rescued the crew of USS Mariner (SP-1136) when that tug foundered in heavy weather. After shepherding other convoys to the Azores between March and July, she was employed for the rest of World War I on patrol and escort service between the Azores and Gibraltar. Placed in reserve upon her return to the U.S. in January 1919, Wadena was decommissioned in May 1919 and sold in July 1920.

This page features the only views we have related to USS Wadena (SP-158) and to the civilian yacht Wadena.
