USS Yankee, a 6225-ton auxiliary cruiser, was built at Newport News, Virginia, in 1892 for commercial use. Acquired by the Navy in April 1898, she served off the U.S. east coast and Cuba during the Spanish-American war and took part in two engagements with enemy forces. Yankee was employed as a training ship and as a transport in 1903-08. On 23 September 1908, she ran aground. Though refloated that December, she subsequently sank while under tow.
This page features 1898 photographs of USS Yankee.
