A glossary of some lesser known golfing terms.

Terms

ABFU * Acronym for the double bogey scored immediately after having made a birde on the previous hole.
BF * Acronym for brain flatulence. A really stupid shot.
BOD * Acronym for best shot of the day.
Blue Bayou * Song sung by Linda Ronstadt
cellophane lid * Unseen covering over a hole that prevents a putt from dropping in as it rolls over the hole. A mythical, but very effective, design.
Harry Lipschitz * A putt that circumnavigates a significant portion of the edge of a hole, but fails to go in.
Linda Ronstadt * A ball hit well beyond the opponents ball. ("Wow! My Podgie just hit a Linda Ronstadt!" "Huh?" "He just Blue Bayou.")
lockjaw * A chronic condition said to be suffered by an opponent who refuses to concede a straight uphill putt of less than 12 inches in match play.
Murphy * An assertion made by a player that he can hole a ball from off the green in two stokes. The outcome determines whether remuneration is given or received.
Podgie * Your playing partner.
RD * A well-struck ball, long and down the middle is said to be "RD" (rite dere).
Talbeau * Any ball that, having struck a tree, bounces back into the fairway in perfect position for playing the next shop. Named in honor of G. Talbeau who manages this feat on a regular basis. (See, for example, Talbeau Rules). * Remuneration given after a unanimous vote of three players in a foursome for a par made by the fourth player on a hole in which that player's drive did not carry the ladies tee. Named, of course, in honor of Talbeau who has achieved this remarkable feat upon more than one occasion.
trash * Individual achievements, such as birdies, sandies, greenies, for which remuneration is received from the opponents.
whack * A challenge make to a player that his ball cannot be holed in two putts. Failure to do so causes the putter tp pay a remuneration to his opponents, but success doubles the remuneration he receives.

Expressions

"Sit like a butterfly on so(re) feet." * Instructions given to a ball to land softly without a great deal of roll
"That dog will hunt." * Said of a well-struck ball that comes to rest in a favorable position.
"Hottern a grill in an all-night cafe" * Playing well.
"Hottern a June bride in a feather bed." * Playing very well
"The other left (right)" * Secondary command given to a ball after it has ignored your first command to stop slicing (hooking).
" Hit a house! " * Command given to a putt that has been struck too firmly. Largely ineffective.
" Hit a barn! "* Command given to a putt that has really been struck too firmly. Totally ineffective.
" You really spanked that monkey! "* Said when a player hits an exceptionally long shot.
" That ball is afraid of the dark! "* Said of a putt that lips out of the hole.
