I spent yesterday in and around Caesar's Head SP in Greenville county, SC
with Molly Bonnell. The birding was kind of slow - we did run into one
interesting flock of feeding warblers containing a couple of Tennessees, a
Hooded/Wilson's female/immature, several Black-throated Greens, several
Black-and-whites and about five or six Alder Flycatchers (we were studying
him closely so we could argue later over Willow/Alder when one of his
companions downslope vocalized, settling the matter). We heard a WB
Nuthatch or two, watched four or so hummers in a field of jewelweed (as well
as several Monarchs and several Spicebush Swallowtails, one of which looked
absolutely fresh and truly beautiful). No hawks moving through at Caesar's
Head yet (at least nothing was reported on the board). No Ravens (I always
like to find Ravens and have a admitted soft spot for Corvids). One
Swainson's Thrush (a beautifully marked individual) in the afternoon. The
wind was blowing quite strongly in the morning from the backside of Dennis
and a light rain started after lunch.
A slow day but no day spent birding is wasted!
