Hi Carolinabirders,
Sorry for the tangent, but I need to call on the general natural history
knowledge of the group. We, the Duke Zoology graduate students,
periodically host top biologists from across the country in our
"Superspeaker" program. We also take these biologists on field trips to
check out the local diversity of organisms, generally the organisms on
which those biologists do research.
So our latest superspeaker does research on the ecology and evolution of
lizards. We are trying to decide where to go for his field trip. In what
part of North Carolina - or South Carolina, if it's within a 3-4 hour
drive of Durham - can we find the greatest diversity of either lizard
species or reptile and amphibian species? At the moment, our best idea is
to look for salamanders along the Blue Ridge somewhere, but if you've got
a good idea, please share it!
Thanks in advance,
Josh
