Hi All,
I participated in a North Carolina Nature Conservancy sponsored
trip to the Outer Banks this past weekend. While we didn't see anything
as exciting as the Redpoll at Alligator River NWR, we did see a few
birds of note, including:
1) Eurasian Wigeon (1). This bird was seen from the south dike
observation platform near the Visitors Center at North Pond on Sunday
morning, fairly close. Careful scanning of the wigeon flocks here in
winter will usually produce this species.
2) Snow Buntings (4). These birds had been reported the weekend before
during the Wings-Over-Water festival. We saw them Saturday afternoon
just southeast of the main ramp to the Salt Pond at Cape Point in the
dunes near the beach.
3) Parasitic Jaeger (4). All on the ocean. One bird was seen from Nags
Head Saturday morning and 3 birds were at Cape Point Sunday afternoon
among the large feeding flock of gulls, gannets and terns off the point.
4) Red-breasted Nuthatches (several). In the pines along the road into
the Bodie Island Lighthouse. The marsh boardwalk is closed here at
present, as it appears to have suffered some damage during recent
storms.
5) American Bittern (several). The marshy areas around the Salt Pond at
Cape Point were very productive the past 2 weekends.
6) American Avocets (100+). These birds were roosting in the southwest
corner of North Pond (Pea Is NWR) both mornings.
We were not able to relocate either the Tree or Lark Sparrows seen the
previous weekend. There were very few sparrows of any description
evident anywhere. Mosquitoes were especially annoying and numerous in
the grassy areas everywhere.
The NC Nature Conservancy is doing 5 more of these trips this winter:
Nov 19-21, Dec 3-5, Dec 10-12, Jan 7-9 and Jan 21-23. Contact the First
Colony Inn in Nags Head at 800-368-9390 for more info.
