RE: Rough-legged Hawk--Alligator River

Pam Burke and I also saw the Rough-legged Hawk at Alligator River NWR Sunday
morning (12/12). It was behaving exactly as Russ Lay described, and was in
what sounds like the same location. We checked on it a couple of times over
a period of about an hour, and it hadn't moved much. We also saw the two
coveys of quail, one bear, and four Bald Eagles. The eagles were perched in
two trees, two adults in one and two immatures in another, on the northern
edge of the fields to the west of Milltail Road, near the maintenance shed.

On Saturday afternoon (12/11), sixteen of us on a Forsyth Audubon field trip
saw three bears, including one estimated at 550-600 pounds by the refuge
staff, and a red wolf, all in the fields on the east side of Milltail Road.
At one point we had the big bear and the wolf in the same field of view in
our spotting scopes.

I think it's safe to say that Alligator River will be a standard part of our
Outer Banks field trips from now on!
