I have a Can O' Worms. It's a trilevel container with a resevoir at the bottom
and a spigot on it for draining the "tea". It works well, and the resevoir
keeps the fluid draining so the worms don't drown. I feed on top and cover
lightly with straw or shredded paper. Yes I have flies, fruit flies and
pillbugs, and I figure they are just part of the process. They don't seem to be
hurting anything. By the time I harvest the castings, the flying things are
gone. Do you have adequate drainage holes? Is the bin raised up off the ground,
like on blocks or something?

Don't give up and don't do too much research. You've already learned what not
to do. You'll get it right.

P.S. I put a whole watermelon in a few weeks ago. The worms loved it.
Probably didn't drown because the liquid drained down.
