I have a 2'x4' box on legs that has an open wire mesh bottom.I feed
horse manure, table and garden scraps on top,and the castings fall thru
the wire onto a concrete floor to dry.I get a 5 gallon bucket a week and
use it in my garden.
Its populated by a mix of red wigglers(E.fotedia)european
nightcrawlers(E.Hortensis)african nightcrawlers(E.Eudicus,sp?).I also
have a large box on the ground that has all the above worms plus our
native Pheritima worms(florida jumpers Georgia nightcrawlers ect.)that i
feed oak leaves, paper and manure. My new system is to put the worms that
fall out of the flow thru box(about 50 a week)into milk crates lined
with black plastic shade cloth.the first crate has a bucket to catch the
liquid, the 2nd has the worms and bedding, and when it fills up i put one
more on and feed it.The worms move up and when its full i harvest the
castings out of the 2nd crate .I`m selling my Europeans to bait stores
and hope to sell the crates soon at the Sarasota farmers market.I could
sell castings too if i ever get enough!Love to talk worms( as you can
tell)and hope you find them as interesting as i do, Greg
