to encourage them, I'd keep the compost pile moist and in shade. to inoculate
the pile with local mushrooms, I would pick ripe mushrooms, make sure that
they are giving off spores (look at them against the light), and shake them
over the moist pile (when my shiitake give off spores, the ground underneath
is white, and the plume of spores is very visible). finally, to get edible
mushrooms (why not get a freebie? just about everyone who has tried them
knows they are gourmet food) I'd go to the Fungi Perfecti Web site and order
some mushrooms suited for my zone.
