Dear Sabitha,
As per shastras, oil bath is not to be taken before sunrise. However, on the day of Deepavali, the shastras indicate that taking oil bath before sunrise is equivalent to taking bath in the Ganges.
For those having to pefrom 'tharpanam' on the that day, if Amavasya falls, the general custom is to take oil bath betore sunrise, wear new clothes. After sun rise, he has to take again bath and peform the tharpanam as in the normal course. Some elders skip the oil bath in the morning, wait for the sun rise, take normal headbath and do the tharpanam and then wear the new clothes. Well. Customs do differ. Some sects in Tamil Nadu, celeberate the Deepavali, the day next to the day when the general public celeberate the deepavali. But the poin to note is that oil bath before sunrise on other days is prohibited by the shastras.
