All, I am not a very learned man or anything but I can respond to this query from how I try and counter it in my life. When we help people and say we don't expect anything in return then, we should not be upset whether they thank you or not or help you when you need help. Its a very tough thing to do I understand that. But if you really want to continue helping and also not get hurt when those people do not respond to your call, this might be a better way of looking at it. To completely rule out any expectations of any sort and help for the sake of helping and if possible forget the deed you have done. This may not sound practically feasible, but if you look at it from pshycological view point, you feel hurt "because you helped them when they needed it byt they did not help you in return",hence denoting you are expecting gratitude for your help(which is human nature). The gratitude part is from the other person which is not under your control, but the expectation part is very much under your control. So by controlling your expectation you can ward of the hurt that you experience. But from my own experiences and practise this method has helped me.
