Sphere of interest:

Dyeing and finishing of polyester textile materials. Research into the mechanisms of surface modification of polyester fibers under the influence of dilute (< 0.1 mol/l) aqueous solutions of ammonia.

Background:

Modification of the surface of polyester fiber by means of polyethylene-terephthalate hydrolysis in aqueous alkaline solutions (NaOH) reduces lectification and hydrophobicity of the fibers. At the same time, alkaline modification causes the deterioration in physico-mechanical properties of polyester textile materials. Our new method of polyester treatment by dilute aqueous ammonia solutions is deprived of these shortcomings.

Some results:

The mechanisms of polyethyleneterephthalate hydrolysis in aqueous ammonia solutions have been investigated over a wide range of temperatures (25 -1300C) and treatment times (60 s - 60 min). The problems of diffusion of cyclic oligomers being also touched upon.

The following technologies have been developed:
bullet5.gif (101 bytes)   the removal of cyclic oligomers and unfixed disperse dyes from coloured polyester fiber and dyeing equipment;
bullet5.gif (101 bytes)   imparting stable antistatic properties to polyester textile materials (surface electric resistance is reduced by 3-4 orders of magnitude);
bullet5.gif (101 bytes)   improved exhaust dyeing of polyester with disperse dyes (dye content on the fiber can be increased by 20-50%).
