By total serendipity I found Lost in the Cosmos while browsing through the bookstore at the small private college I had attended 10 years earlier. This book struck such a chord and I have read and re-read it many times. From there I branched out and read all of his other books, most recently completing the Moviegoer only about a week ago. Just yesterday I finished "The Correspondence of Shelby Foote and Walker Percy".

I guess the main thing that Percy does for me is to put into words the uneasy feelings I think all of us have that the world is going crazy all around us ("the center did not hold") and lets us know that we have a right to feel depressed and anxious about it all.

Percy has also influenced me spiritually. The last 20 years of my life have been spent in an essentially agnostic/atheist mode. Feeling rather spiritually poor and understanding Percy's thesis that religion may be the only true means of reentry to the world, I have been participating in membership classes at the local Roman Catholic church the last two months. For better or worse, I would never have turned down this path if I had not discovered Percy's works.
