Everybody Cooks!
This trip is "family-style" -- When you RSVP, let your hosts know which meal you'd like to prepare. We like to cook, and cook for our friends, and we hope you do, too. (If not, there are several decent take-out places in town.)
There is a grocery store in Clarksville or you can easily transport your supplies in a cooler, since the drive is only 45 -80 minutes (45 from Durham, 80 from Raleigh). The kitchen is full-size, and most any utensil you can imagine will be there (ask if you're concerned).
We'll do this first-come, first-serve via email, so choose your cooking partner(s), let us know which meal you want and what you want to make. If there isn't a meal slot open for the time you'll be around, you can of course join up with folks already signed upnoone usually minds an extra hand and it's a really big kitchen!
We'll post what people are doing when we hear back.
One thing we did learn from last year is that we didn't need to cook quite so much! Instead of including a lunch meal in the schedule (which was far too much trouble), we think it would work out beautifully if everyone contributed to the lunch supplies, and we all fended for ourselves mid-day.
Below the schedule will be a list of stuff people will be bringing (and, early on, a list of ideas). Anything that would be good for a picnic will work. If people get weary, they can go back to the main house and fix food there, but some may want to take lunch on the boat, or go canoeing and have an actual picnic experience. (We will have several coolers, but feel free to bring yours as they always come in handy.)
Food Allergies/Preferences
If you have a food allergy or preference you'd like people to know about (lest they accidentally kill you), let us know.
We currently have RSVP'ed guests who are:
- allergic to garlic
- allergic to shellfish
- vegetarian (2)
This doesn't mean you can't use any garlic or meat -- just be nice and make sure there's at least something without garlic/meat in it for the 'special' people to eat. And you might want to point out any food you make that contains stuff someone is allergic to. (If this were a rule, it would be the Kristin Dunivant Rule.)
Beverages and Snacks
We will have at the house soda (Diet Coke, Coke, Pepsi, Sprite) and a handful of basic liquors (rum, vodka, Jack Daniels), as well as various mixers (daquiri stuff, Rocky's pina colada recipe, sour mix). We will also pick up a case of bottled water (this is always a great extra thing to bring, since we go through a lot on the boat in the sun), and a few big bags of basic snack foods (chips, pretzels, nuts). Feel free to bring whatever snacks or beverages you'd like, to share or not. (Sharing recommended, see rule 1.)
Luncheon
Ideas:- bread - white, wheat, buns or rolls.
- cheese
- condiments - mayo, miraclewhip/salad dressing, mustard, ketchup, pickles, ranch dressing
- tomato, lettuce, onion, cucumber, sprouts, mushrooms, etc. (sandwich veggies -- and yes, I know mushrooms aren't veggies)
- peanut butter / jelly
- celery, broccoli, carrot sticks (please coordinate this. we love carrots, but we had something like 5 lbs of baby carrots left over last year. It was truly insane.), or other cut up veggies for snacking
- grapes
- apples, oranges, tangerines, pears, plums, etc. (portable fruit)
- chips, crackers, pretzels, snack packs of crackers or cookies (school lunch supplies)
- trail mix
- paper plates
- napkins and paper towels
- plastic cutlery
- sodas (in cans or bottles as they're easier to keep cold on the water)
- RC Cola
- Moon Pies
- Doritos
- chex mix
- big bag of plain potato chips
- big bag of pretzels
- tiny diet cokes (Kat & Corwin)
- luncheon meat (Richard)
We will of course fill in at the end with whatever people aren't bringing, or stuff we see that looks like a good idea. Feel free to do the same, but the more you can let us know, the better we can plan. If we find we are horrendously short, we may beg a collection to run to the local grocery. Judging by last years largesse, this isn't bloody likely.
We won't need cups cause folks from last year have their own, and we'll of course have new cups to decorate. ;)
