Hi, Bill,
I think there is--as long as you recognize that there are at least two types
of causation: direct causation and (not sure exactly what to call it)
grounds-causation or reason (i.e., in an X of Y construction: Y is the
reason X happened, though not X's direct cause).
I teach that any time you have two nouns in a genitive relation, both of
which are event words, there is the potential that they are reflecting a
deep structure in which one event is the cause (or means, purpose, result
etc) of the other event.
I take Mark 1:4 this way "a baptism of repentance" = a baptism on the
grounds of the candidate's repentance.
