With some reluctance I am calling this thread to a halt. Certainly
opposing understandings of the two texts in question have been argued
in the course of this discussion, but particularly disturbing in
several of the more recent contributions to the thread have been the
intrusion of generic criteria regarding the nature of Revelation --
hermeneutical judgments -- and increasingly the adducing of what
might be called "proof-texts" from beyond the immediate context,
beyond even the book of Revelation, in support of an interpretation
of Rev 13:8 and/or Rev 17:8 that one favors. My judgment is that
doctrinal concerns may have weighed more heavily from the outset than
a concern to discern precisely what the text AS A GREEK TEXT may or
may not mean, but arguments are now being adduced from beyond the
immediate context, in some instances without any concern for citation
of a relevant GREEK Biblical text, in support of a doctrinal stance
rather than of a grammatical demonstration.
Accordingly, I am calling a halt to this thread. PLEASE DO NOT POST
ADDITIONAL MESSAGES on this subject-header or re-introduce the topic
under a different header.
From the FAQ: "B-Greek must not be used either to attack or to
defend any particular doctrine deemed "orthodox" by one or another
individual or group; this is not the forum for apologetic
controversy. ,,, Those who violate these policies will be contacted
politely by the B-Greek staff and requested to conform to these
guidelines. Those who continue to violate the policies will no longer
be welcome in the conference."
