Dear Webber,
>Mark 8:22-26 is the story of the Blind Man healed at
>Bethsaida. After Jesus spits in his eyes and lays his
>hands on him he asks the blind man "Do you see
>anything?" This is the way (I think) all English
>translations translate the verse, even as far back as
>Wycliffs translation. However, the Greek is as such
>"EI TI BLEPEIS" Couldnt this be translated
>literally "YOU ARE WHAT SEEING?" - or more properly,
>"What do you see?" Any comments would be helpful.
HH: This idea does not work because BLEPEIS is
not a participle ("seeing") but is a main verb:
"you see." Actually EI here means "if" and is a
way of introducing a question (wooden literalism:
"If anything you see?) translatable as "Do you
see anything?"
Yours,
Harold Holmyard
