Subject: [B-Greek] 2 Peter 1:10 diagramming question
DIO MALLON, ADELFOI, SPOUDASATE BEBAIAN hUMWN THN
KLHSIN KAI EKLOGHN POIEISQAI...
In my attempts to diagram this sentence, I have run into a couple of
questions re: the relationship between the direct objects (THN KLHSIN KAI
EKLOGHN) and the predicate accusative (BEBAIAN) to the infinitive,
POIEISQAI. What is the best way to diagram a predicate accusative modifying
two direct objects? I am working on the assumption that the predicate
accusative is to the D.O. as a predicate adjective is to the predicate
nominative. Currently, I have BEBAIAN under THN KLHSIN KAI EKLOGHN, which
seems to blunt its relationship to POIEISQAI. In other words, the way I
have it diagramed, it appears merely adjectival, but it can't be purely
adjectival since it is not possible to "make" calling or election. Rather,
their firmness is being made, or better, the assurance of these
already-present-realities is being established/reinforced to the possessors.
If I'm understanding the text properly (and I suppose I may not be), how do
I accurately reflect that in a diagram?
My present diagram looks like this:
SPOUDASATE | KLHSIN KAI EKLOGHN
|
|__ BEBAIAN
|
|__ hUMWN
|
|__ THN
Does this properly depict the relationships? Or is there a better way to do
it?
Also, is the placement of hUMWN before THN KLHSIN KAI EKLOGHN purely for
emphasis or is this more common than I realize?
Thank you so much in advance for you help.
