Subject: [B-Greek] Matthew 20:30 and 31 punctuation
I have two questions related to this passage:
KAI IDOU DUO TUFLOI KAQHMENOI PARA THN hODON
AKOUSANTES hOTI IHSOUS PARAGEI, EKRAXAN LEGONTES,
KURIE, ELEHSON hHMAS hUIE, DAUID. 31 hO DE OCLOS
EPETIMHSEN AUTOIS hINA SIWPHSWSIN hOI DE MEIZON
EKRAXAN LEGONTES, KURIE, ELEHSON hHMAS, hUIE DAUID
(Eclectic text by Goodrick-Kohlenberger. I think this
is the Greek text behind the NIV. It is the Greek text
used for my Reader's GNT) I don't feel bad using this
text because the English is footnoted, not
interlinear...so, when I don't know a word, I can
glance down.
Note the difference in punctuation. ELEHSON hHMAS
hUIE, DAUID (30) and ELEHSON hHMAS, hUIE DAUID (31).
1. What could possibly lead to this difference in
punctuation? I can't see how vs 30 makes any sense at
all as to how they punctuate it. hUIE would be the
vocative. Do they assume "Have mercy on us Son,
David"? hUIE by itself seems awkward.
2. Why does IHSOUS decline but not DAUID?
It is nit picky things like this that bring my studies
to a snail's pace. I

Firstly, I have the UBS 4th Edition, and mine reads:
KAI IDOU DUO TUFLOI KAQHMENOI PARA THN hODON AKOUSANTES hOTI IHSOUS PARAGEI EKRAXAV LEGOVTES, ELEHSON hHMAS, [KURIE], hUIOS DAUID. hO DE OCLOS EPETIMHSEN AUTOIS hINA SIWPHSWSIN: hOI DE MEIZON EKRAXAV LEGONTES, ELEHSON hHMAS, KURIE, hUIOS DAUID.
So, for this reason, I am not sure how to answer you concerning your first point. My Greek does not have the odd punctuation, and HUIOS is in the nominative.
As for the second question, DAUID is just a Greek transliteration of the Hebrew "David", and because of this (and it's stem vowel peculiarity, or lack thereof) it is simply rendered indeclinable, while IHSOUS is perfectly declinable, just like PAULOS, PETROS, IAKWBOS, or MARIA. But, DAUID simply can't be declined, just like ABRAAM, ISAAK, or IAKWB. And some names even have both declinable and indeclinable forms, such as Saul, which can be SAULOS (declinable) or SAOUL (indeclinable), and Mary has another form (MARIAM) which is indeclinable.
