Bryan wins bar selection

Posted on May 21, 2009 by Staff

Former Carrboro Board of Aldermen member Jay Bryan was the top vote-getter in last week’s 15B Judicial Bar selection of who will serve out the rest of Judge Alonzo Coleman’s term.

At a meeting last week at the Institute of Government, Bryan won the vote with 115 votes, followed by Glenn Gerding with 114 and Lunsford Long with 87.

The results will be forwarded to Gov. Beverly Perdue, who has the option of choosing from among the three. If she does not nominate one of them within 60 days, Bryan will automatically get the job.

Judge Coleman will turn 72 on June 30, and according to state law must retire.
The 15B Judicial District Bar, which is made up of attorneys from Orange and Chatham counties, met Thursday night at the Institute of Government to vote on three names to send to the governor.
