    Lieutenant Walter A. Haas, USNR

    Instructing flight students from the cockpit of a Brewster F2A "Buffalo" fighter, at Naval Air Station, Miami, Florida, 9 April 1943. The F2A was then in use as a training aircraft.
    Lieutenant Haas had recently returned from the war zone.
    Note that the students are wearing white cap covers and khaki shirts.

    Loads the fuselage .50 caliber machineguns of a Brewster F2A "Buffalo" fighter with ammunition, at Naval Air Station, Miami, Florida, 9 April 1943. The F2A was then in use as a training aircraft.
    Note 3:1 ratio of black-tipped armor-piercing ammunition to red-tipped tracer ammunition.

    USS Long Island (AVG-1)


    Underway on 8 July 1941, with two F2A fighters parked at the forward end of her flight deck.
    Note flight deck markings: "LI". The ship is painted in Measure 1 camouflage, with heavy weathering of paint evident on the hull side.

    Planes parked on her flight deck include F2A-1 fighters (parked forward), SBD scout-bombers (amidships) and TBD-1 torpedo planes (aft).
    Note the false bow wave painted on her hull, forward, and badly chalked condition of the hull's camouflage paint.

    Battle of Midway, June 1942


    Damaged and partially disassembled Grumman F4F-3 "Wildcat" fighter (Bureau # 4006) on Sand Island, Midway, circa 24-25 June 1942.
    This plane, a unit of Marine Fighting Squadron 221 (VMF-221), was flown by Captain John F. Carey, USMC, during the squadron's attack on incoming Japanese planes on the morning of 4 June. Carey was wounded in this action.
    Several other planes are visible right background, including F2A-3 "Buffalo" fighters.

    Note the variety of types, some built for training purposes and others former combat aircraft. The latter feature a wide variety of color schemes and markings.
    Planes closest to the camera are North American SNJ-3 & SNJ-5 trainers.
    Those beyond include Brewster F2A fighters (at right); Grumman F2F and F3F fighters (left and center); Curtiss SBC scout bombers (just beyond the fighters); and Northrup BT bombers (left distance).
