The original caption reads: "S-4 in drydock, with bodies of eight seamen still sealed in one of its compartments .... The S-4 as she slowly emerged from the water in dry dock today, disclosing the huge hole in her side."
The submarine sank after colliding with USCGC Paulding on 17 December 1927. The hole from the collision was in her starboard hull side, just forward of her deck gun, and is not visible in this photograph, which was taken from off S-4's port quarter.
Salvage pontoons YSP-10 and YSP-6 are visible in the background. Several diving support rafts are alongside the submarine.

In dry dock at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, 19 March 1928, after salvage.
The original caption reads: "In drydock with bodies of 8 seamen still sealed in one of its compartments. The ill-fated S-4 was placed in drydock and the sea water drained out of her ..., today for the first time the gaping hole in her side made by the Coast Guard Destroyer Paulding came into view. Photo shows Comdr. Saunders placing a wreath over the spot where the 8 bodies of seamen still lie entombed in the sub."
The hole made in S-4 hull is still below the water level in this photograph. It was located below the break in superstructure plating visible in in the left side of the image.

In dry dock at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts, on 19 March 1928, after salvage. The water has been largely pumped out of the drydock, exposing the hole in S-4's starboard side (just forward of her 4"/50 deck gun) made when she collided with USCGC Paulding on 17 December 1927. The bodies of eight crew members are still in the submarine's Torpedo Room, where they were trapped when she sank after the collision.
