Photo #: 80-G-258259

Normandy Invasion, June 1944

View of the "Gooseberry" breakwater of sunken ships at the east end of the "Mullberry 'A'" artificial harbor off "Omaha" Beach, with shipping offshore.
Taken by Combat Photo Unit Eleven (CPU-11). The image is dated 2 November 1944, but was actually taken about mid-June, shortly after the "D-Day" landings.
USS LCT-572 is beached at the shoreline in the center.
Note the small building and dark pillbox in the center foreground, with a vehicle park further to the right. Photo # 80-G-253256 provides a closer view of that area, taken from the pillbox.
Photo # 80-G-253260 appears to form a panorama of the beach, adjoining to the right side of this image.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
