Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands


A Douglas R4D transport plane (center) loads wounded Marines on Iwo Jima's South Airfield, for evacuation to a Navy hospital on Guam, in March 1945.
Several Curtiss R5C (C-46) transport planes are parked nearby, with a number of TBM "Avenger" torpedo planes beyond them. The tail of a PBY is at left and a wrecked PB4Y-2 is at right. Six other aircraft are flying in formation over Mount Suribachi, in the left distance.
