Iwo Jima Operation, 1945

Waves of amphibious tractors (LVTs) and landing craft head for the landing beaches, shortly before "H-Hour" during the invasion of Iwo Jima, 19 February 1945.
The island, with Mount Suribachi in the center, is shrouded in smoke from the continuing pre-landing bombardment. Three battleships are visible, with USS Nevada (BB-36), in pattern camouflage paint, at left. The battleship seen faintly in the center, in line with Mount Suribachi, may be USS Idaho (BB-42). That toward the right is USS Tennessee) (BB-43). Eight LSTs are in the foreground.
Photographed from a USS Makin Island (CVE-93) airplane.

Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the collections of the Naval Historical Center.
